In Memoriam: Harry D. Mayo III (1939–2022)

Harry D. Mayo, III

Harry D. Mayo III graduated from Pace in 1961 and in many ways, he never left. Harry's volunteer roles over the years included service on the Planned Giving Advisory Board, the Seminar Day Committee and as a Seminar Day speaker. But his longest-term commitment to Pace was as a member of the Lubin Alumni Association Board, including roles as the Committee Chair.

Harry remained involved in many other ways, attending luncheons, reunion events, alumni parties and golf outings. In honor of Harry, Pace recently established an award in his name—the Harry D. Mayo III '61, '78 Distinguished Service Award, which was awarded to Harry as the first recipient in May 2022.

When he wasn't involved with Pace, Harry forged a successful career in business, becoming a successful executive and consultant, including roles with International Paper and Merrill Lynch. Harry also enjoyed a decades-long career in Human Resources.

Perhaps the culmination of his career was spent leading the human resources team for the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission, a governmental agency with public health and national security responsibilities, where Harry led approximately 600 union and nonunion employees. Harry was also a longtime volunteer for North Bergen, New Jersey, where he served on the planning/zoning board.

Harry credited Pace with much of his success and volunteerism. In addition to graduating with his bachelor's degree in finance, Harry earned his MBA in executive management and was active serving in the student government and other extracurricular roles. These experiences taught Harry academic success and the importance of giving back to the community.

Harry was also a loyal and generous supporter of Pace's Annual Fund, and in recent years Harry included Pace in his estate plan, being inducted into the Edward J. Mortola Heritage Society in 2021.
